Swaziland (7 Sep)

Swaziland is a very traditional country – there is huge potential for the country to be divided between those who want to keep things as they are and people who want to bring about more democratic change and modernise Swaziland.  Pray that the country can move forward peacefully and find a way to honour the best of Swaziland’s traditions and democracy at the same time.

Afghanistan (6 Sep)

Pray for the protection of Muslim background believers and Christians working in such a harsh and difficult environment and for a greater openness of Afghanis to the gospel.

Sudan (5 Sep)

The coming January marks the end of a 6 year peace agreement between north Sudan, which is primarily Islamic, and south Sudan, where many Christians reside. It is speculated that the south will secede from the north. In daily life, Christians, Muslims, and followers of traditional African religions have lived side by side without problems. However, as an independent state, the non-Muslim southern Sudanese could escape Islamization, Arabization, and marginalization from the centre of power, as well as have most of the country's oil in their territory. Many church leaders have openly supported the separation of southern Sudan from the north. Pray that the people will make the right choice in the vote scheduled for January 9, 2011.

Middle East (4 Sep)

On the eve of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, the US has appealed to both sides not to let the killing of four Jewish settlers near Hebron derail the talks.  Pray for the success of these talks that there might be a breakthrough in negotiations and that peace might become a real hope for the Palestinians and Israelis.

Austria (3 Sep)

The future for the evangelical church in Austria is challenging but positive. There are the beginnings of a huge shift in the Austrian mentality about religion. To be Austrian was to be Roman Catholic and that is changing; large numbers of people are giving up their nominal membership of the Roman Catholic Church (having to pay an annual church tax probably contributes to this.) Younger people see the traditional church as having lost touch and are more open to other faiths and ideologies.   Pray that the evangelical church helps people reconnect with God and to see the relevance of a Christ centred life.

Yemen (2 Sep)

Yemen has been accused by Amnesty International of abandoning human rights in the name of security.  The human rights group has documented what it says is a series of violations, including unlawful killings of those suspected of having links to al-Qaeda.  It also says the Yemeni government has ignored human rights as it tackles a breakaway movement in the south and Shia rebels in the north.  Pray for the Yemeni authorities as they struggle with problems on many fronts.  Pray also for the Muslim background believers in this context that their witness and lives might be salt and light in this society.

South Africa (1 Sep)

There has been a real effort to begin to address the centuries of oppression and pain that South Africans have suffered. Praise God for what has been achieved and pray that Christians would continue to model grace, forgiveness and reconciliation.
